Moving Tips from Denver Movers

If you’ve decided to take on your move by yourself, make sure to read these moving and packing tips. Make your move the easiest it can be, avoiding hassles and problems, with these useful tips.

Packing Tips

  • Host a garage sale and sell or donate your unwanted items to charity. This will make the packing process much easier and keep your new home uncluttered.
  • Pack your plates and records vertically to avoid breakage.
  • Use red packing tape for important boxes with valuable items you’ll need quickly when you move into your new home.
  • Color coding stickers are also a great way to easily indicate items in boxes. Writing may be hard to see.
  • Check out Craigslist’s “free” section for a dozen listings on free boxes. Coffee and liquor shops can also be a great source.
  • Make sure you get rid of flammable or hazardous items when sorting out your belongings. Moving companies will not be able to move these.
  • Pack a suitcase as if you were going on a 2 day vacation. No one wants to sort through boxes after just moving in.
  • Empty out your fridge. Unplug it two days ahead of the move to defrost it.
  • Recycle any unwanted paper or shred any personal documents. Paper can be heavy in large amounts.
  • Pack the items you need the least such as seasonal items or guest room furniture.
  • Use smaller boxes for heavier items.
  • Pack electronic devices into their original boxes to avoid confusion and maintain their safety.
  • Remember that moving companies don’t just help move your furniture, they can also help you with packing and wrapping.

Wrapping Tips

  • Wrap fragile items in clothing to save up on wrapping material expenses.
  • Cover items such as shampoo and conditioners with bags or saran wrap to avoid messes.
  • Label wires and cords to avoid confusion when setting up.
  • For wrapping clothes, use trashbags to wrap up hung clothes from closets. Have the clothes hanging on your closet already, and place the clothes into the bag with the hanger still attached.

Loading/Unloading Tips

  • If your friends are helping you move, have prepared beverages and food for them as a thank you. If you’re planning on donating some of your items, let them have a look to see if they want anything.
  • Always lift using your legs, not your back.
  • Use an extension cord to move a radio or fan to your moving truck. It will keep you cool and raise everyone’s spirits.
  • Load your valuable items into your own car to make sure you don’t have them damaged or lost.
  • Arrange moving plans for your pets and plants. Movers are not able to move these for you.

Settling In

  • Host a housewarming party!
  • Unpack the kitchen boxes first. You and your family will be wanting some food when getting all settled in. Picking up disposable plates and cups is a great idea.
